CBT, Counselling and Psychotherapy

What is the difference between CBT, Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Although the terms 'counselling' and 'psychotherapy' are used interchangeably, counselling tends to refer to more goal-orientated, shorter term, time limited work whereas psychotherapy often involves a longer term, open ended agreement which enables the therapist and client to work at a deeper level.

There are many different counselling and psychotherapy approaches - CBT is just one of the most popular, evidence based, short-term approaches that is extensively used in the NHS. My client area has a number of examples of handouts that I use with my clients on a regular basis.

However, as I am an integrative counsellor and psychotherapist this means that I do not adhere to one specific model but draw from several approaches. My practice is based on humanistic principles that emphasise the consideration of you as a whole person.

As we are all unique I adapt my way of working to what will work best for you. Although much of our work together may involve talking about what is happening currently in your life, it may be important to talk about things that have happened in the past and so understand how these affect your everyday life; with this awareness we can consider changes that could lead to a life that simply works better for you.

The most important aspect of my approach is that we work in a way that you are comfortable so that that you are able to take things at a pace which feels right for you.
